Keepin' it fresh

When it comes to fruits and veggies, I see all these crazy videos all over the internet about the little bugs, poisons, etc that are trapped on them. Aside from all the little creepy crawlies, if your house is like this house, you wash all the fruit, get it all sliced up for the kids and then no one eats it and it rots away in the fridge! YUCK!

I saw a couple videos online this month and thought I would try them out. Turns out there is a way to keep those berries fresh and clean for a long time.

First things first....let's wash those bad boys. I filled a bowl with luke warm water and about 1/4 cup of white vinegar, let them sit for about 20 minutes and rinsed with cold water. Check out how dirty the water was and believe me, this picture does not do it justice. All the seeds pretty much fell out but there was dirt, little gnats and other floaters in there.

After they were all clean and ready to go, I sliced some up in little pieces and left some whole. I read in an article that berries will last longer in an airtight jar. Most articles referenced that you should leave them unwashed but knowing my kids, I had to wash them or they would just eat the dirty fruit. So this was my household experiment.

I found these cuties at the Target Dollar Spot. You know, that over looked area right when you walk into Target. You get three jars for $3. Can't beat that price. They are also perfect snack size for my two girls.

As I said, I sliced some up and left some whole. They were a perfect quick grab from the fridge when my girls needed a snack. Best of all the strawberries stayed fresh for over a week in these cute little jars! All in all, I'd give this a definite thumbs up!
